6. Pan's Labyrinth

"It's like Alice in Wonderland for grown ups" is something that has been said about Pan's Labyrinth so much since it came out. While that's a very generic statement, it holds some truth because, with Pan's Labyrinth, Guillermo Del Toro presents one of the most creative and interesting worlds in the history of film. The story of Ofelia is a fairy-tale that's steeped in the traditions of horror, making for one of the most original movies I've ever seen. What makes Pan's Labyrinth so magical is the labyrinth itself; it is filled with some of the greatest creatures ever committed to film, and they elevate the narrative enormously. The faun is strangely charming yet dangerous at the same time, and the Pale Man is as frightening as he is interesting. Who can forget the scene where the Pale Man first lifts his hands to his face revealing his eyes on his palms, or the scene where Ofelia must confront the giant frog? It's moments like those that give the film such a magical feeling.
