Disney had a tone problem during the '80s. The themes got WAY dark, the music was less "Hakuna Matata" and more "We're all going to die" and the animation was nothing short of terrifying. Showing a kid movies from Disney's '80s period should be done with extreme caution.

The Black Cauldron was by far Disney's most sinister endeavour. Disney delved into the world of swords and sorcery, telling the story of a young farmhand who must prevent the evil Horned King from summoning an army of the dead.

The animation itself was baffling and unnerving, the majority of the characters looked like your typical Disney cartoons, but the Horned King looked like a twisted creation from the mind of Ralph Bakshi. No doubt the filmmakers were inspired by his sinister animated take on the Lord of the Rings several years prier. Indeed, John Hurt - who played Aragorn in Bakshi's Rings - was cast to voice the Horned King.

Watching any scene that featured the menacing character became an exercise in trying not to you sh*t your pants, but when he finally summoned his undead army, all bets were off.

Before engrossing myself in the written word, I spent several years in the TV and film industry. During this time I became proficient at picking things up, moving things and putting things down again.
