5. The Hun's Burn A Village: Mulan (1998)

Mulan is mostly remembered for Eddie Murphy's performance as the dragon (not lizard) Mushu, as well as its truly brilliant songs.

But the film also contains the terrifying, Shan Yu - the Hun warlord who invades China, causing Mulan to secretly enlist in the army. Every scene with this guy is sinister. He's constantly emerging dramatically out of the shadows, with hauntingly evil eyes, and some kind of demon-hawk perched on his shoulder.

We never really see him doing anything all that horrific, but it's heavily implied he commits some pretty heinous acts. Shan Yu's most horrendous atrocity is shown to us after he's already left the scene of the crime, but somehow it makes it all the more haunting.

Mulan and company are fresh out of bootcamp, and on a high at the prospect of linking up with the Imperial Army. The group stumble upon a burning village and make the discovery that everyone has been slaughtered. Not only that, but the entire Imperial Army, led by the famed General Li, has also been massacred. After all the lighthearted musical moments that precede this scene, it's a shocking snap back to reality.
