5. The Island Of Dr Moreau (1996)

Robo Vampire
New Line Cinema

Does anyone pick up a paycheque like Marlon Brando? There have been actors who didn’t care before and there’ll be such actors to come, but Brando in the ‘90s for phoning it in what Brando in the ‘50s did for film acting. This hugely regrettable remake of The Island Of Dr Moreau might just be his career nadir.

His heart wasn’t in it, understandably given the recent loss of his daughter, but rather than quit, Brando simply didn’t learn any of his lines and had them read to him through an earpiece. His role - the title character - was reduced in light of this.

Further shooting issues - Val Kilmer’s temper, director firings, the extremely bad script - meant that this was not a happy set. And while such tensions can be conducive to a quality finished product, that most assuredly was not to be here. The film’s lofty aim is to tell a story about a doctor playing God, and the pitfalls in such hubris.

It swiftly descends into high camp, with Val Kilmer whiting up (for reasons too tedious to detail), Brando winding down, and poor old David Thewlis looking embarrassed to be involved.
