10 Most Unintentionally Hilarious Horror Movies
4. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation
The fourth installment in the increasingly creaky Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise is funny enough in its own right as a badly plotted and ill thought out horror sequel, but the later careers of two of its stars make it more amusing in hindsight. Matthew McConaughey and Rennee Zellweger were, in 1995, merely a year or two away from their big break.
These were the dues they had to pay on their way to the top. Zellweger takes the lead role, and is fine. She does what’s required of a horror movie heroine - she screams and runs around a lot,, and makes bafflingly bad decisions.
McConaughey, on the other hand, manages to make somewhat more of a spectacle of himself - admittedly while presumably having quite a lot of fun. This is peak pre-McConaissance Matthew here, as he gurns, shouts, and hurls his gangly frame around every scene.
Without his exuberance, the film would be unwatchable. He’s probably not going to win any awards for his acting here, but his charisma (as well as a very odd plot point involving the assassination of JFK) turns this from just a bad film to a bad film with a few entertainingly mad elements.
