10 Movie Adaptations That Clearly Hated The Source Material
2. Spider-Man 3
I am one of those people who absolutely adores Spider-Man 3 (sorry if I've instantly lost all your respect), but even I can concede that Sam Raimi was very obviously having a nightmarish time adapting the characters and storylines for this third movie.
The director evidently loved the web head, but he always made it known that his fondness was for the 60s Golden Era, and villains like Doc Ock and the Vulture (who he sadly never got to realise on the big screen). One he was not a fan of was Venom, which caused issues when Sony, and especially producer Avi Arad, wanted the symbiote in the third film.
That dislike of the material is evident in the finished product, which strangely sidelines Eddie Brock and Venom, and on a base level totally misuses and mischaracterises the villain.
Raimi would come to admit this impacted the movie's quality, saying on the Nerdist podcast in 2015:
"I tried to make it work, but I didn’t really believe in all the characters, so that couldn’t be hidden from people who loved Spider-Man. If the director doesn’t love something, it’s wrong of them to make it when so many other people love it."
