10 Movie Adaptations That Should Have Been TV Shows
7. The Book Thief
Trying to adapt a long piece of literature into a feature-length film is never easy, and given that The Book Thief is six-hundred pages, it seemed like an odd choice to try and convert such a work to the big screen.
Markus Zusak’s tale of a young girl living in the outskirts of Munich during the Nazi regime is a wonderful story, and one that has a great emotional punch in its final act.
The simple problem with the movie was that the brilliance of Zusak’s novel was lost in translation due to extensive cutting of the source material. Consequently, the ending of the movie adaptation felt flat despite some solid performances from the cast.
The beauty of Zusak’s novel is that it is slow yet deeply immersive, and as such, it would have translated much more smoothly had it been adapted for television.
