At the time, this was a perfect motivational cameo, but once Armstrong confessed to illegal doping throughout his career in 2013, the cameo took on an entirely different tenor.

Watched today, it's both cringe-inducing and also funnier precisely because the film itself has become complicit in Armstrong's deception, helping perpetuate his mythic comeback story which, in turn, helps Peter triumph over Goodman.

That's not to entirely downplay the inspirational power of Armstrong's very real return from the brink of death, even if it's forever tainted by the scandal attached to it.
