One bright diamond in the rough that has been DC's post-Dark Knight cinematic presence is 2017's Wonder Woman, but what Patty Jenkins' stellar outing created was an expectation for a sequel that was never going to be met.

Wonder Woman 1984 fell short in just about every single aspect, both critically and commercially. At the very heart of the flop sequel was controversy surrounding the return of Chris Pine's Steve Trevor, who died during the first film.

Though there was a precedent set for characters returning from the dead when Henry Cavill's Superman came back in Justice League, Steve Trevor wasn't technically resurrected. Instead, the writers went down a much more questionable path. When Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) held the magical Dreamstone, a mystical object that had the power to grant any wish, she used said wish to bring Steve back.

However, it was more complicated than just Steve returning. With his body lost, his soul inhabited the body of a seemingly random, unnamed man. Diana saw this man as Steve, though everyone else saw his usual form, while there were absolutely no details given as to what happened to his soul as his body was taken over by another.

Diana essentially using this mystery man's body without any kind of consent was borderline disturbing, particularly when it would have been so easy for the writers simply to have allowed the Dreamstone to bring Steve's whole being back instead.
