10 Movie Characters Who Broke Their Own Rules

8. Paul Edgecombe - The Green Mile

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Benedict Cumberbatch
Warner Bros.

There are some rules on this list, as with the Abbotts' whole 'no noise' thing in A Quiet Place, that should be obvious. This entry is similar, in that you wouldn't really want to remove any prisoner who resides on Death Row from their cell.

However, over the course of The Green Mile, it was proven without question that John Coffey (Michael Clarke Duncan) was not a normal prisoner. He was, in fact, a man with miraculous powers of healing who was wrongly accused and convicted of killing two young girls he was actually trying to save.

Paul Edgecombe (Tom Hanks) was in charge of the Green Mile, and felt firsthand the effects of John's healing powers when he cleared up the worst urinary infection he had ever suffered from. With his friend and boss' wife dying of cancer, Paul couldn't escape the feeling of being able to help.

In spite of the moral dilemma, the dangers not only of releasing a man from Death Row, but of potentially losing their jobs as well as prison time for themselves, Paul, Brutus (David Morse), Dean (Barry Pepper), and Harry (Jeffrey DeMunn) smuggled John to Melinda Moore's (Patricia Clarkson) house. He worked his magic and saved her life before going back to fill out his sentence in the most heartbreaking way possible.
