10 Movie Characters Who Ruined EVERYTHING

7. The Chef - Contagion

28 Weeks Later Dumb
Warner Bros.

The final scene of Steven Soderbergh's eerily prescient pandemic thriller Contagion reveals how patient zero for the virus, Beth Emhoff (Gwyneth Paltrow), contracted it in the first place.

After one of her company's bulldozers cleared a tree in China, a bat took shelter at a pig farm and dropped an infected banana piece which was consumed by a pig.

This pig was then slaughtered and prepared at a casino in Macau, after which the chef failed to wash his hands before shaking hands with Beth, transmitting the virus to her.

As a result, Beth unknowingly becomes patient zero, allowing the virus to spread and, per its alarmingly high mortality rate, cause at least 26 million deaths over the course of the story.

And it's all because a careless chef didn't practise one of the most aspects of food hygiene safety while at work.

There are certainly much easier-to-loathe characters in the movie, but none who caused quite so much damage through their sheer recklessness.
