10 Movie Cliffhangers That Were Ignored In The Sequel
3. Alice Teams Up With Wesker To Fight The Red Queen - Resident Evil: Retribution
The fifth entry into the Resident Evil movie series, Retribution, is in no way a good movie, but it at least ends with a howlingly ridiculous cliffhanger ending that actually piqued the interest for a follow-up.
Retribution concludes with Alice (Milla Jovovich), Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory), and the other survivors meeting Albert Wesker (Shawn Roberts) at his base, which of course happens to be the heavily fortified White House.
Wesker ends up injecting Alice with the T-virus, restoring her superhuman abilities, before explaining that the survivors in the White House are all that remains of the human race, as they prepare to stage an all-out assault against Umbrella's malevolent AI known as the Red Queen.
The insane final shot sees the survivors protecting the White House from incoming masses of zombies and winged monsters, in what's nothing if not an awesome setup for an unhinged finale to the series.
And yet for head-scratching reasons this arc was thrown out with the bath water in the sixth film, The Final Chapter, where it's promptly revealed through narration that Wesker betrayed Alice.
We never learn the fates of Jill, Leon (Johann Urb), or Ada (Li Bingbing), with the movie instead being a post-apocalyptic yarn in the vein of Mad Max focused around Alice and Claire Redfield (Ali Larter).
The franchise had a loose grasp on continuity and basic logic at the best of times, but this? This was straight-up insulting.
