10 Movie Franchises Where The Villain Became A Hero
3. Mystique - X-Men: Apocalypse
In the original X-Men trilogy Mystique was firmly on the same wavelength as Magneto, and was keen on wiping out humanity before they could do the same to mutants. She was willing to kill humans and mutants alike to achieve her goal, and while she was quite cool she wasn’t particularly redeemable.
The prequel trilogy softened her a good deal, revealing in First Class that she and Charles were practically brother and sister, and while she joins Magneto’s cause she doesn’t completely embrace the dark side. The fact Jennifer Lawrence became a huge star after The Hunger Games influenced Mystique’s gradual shift towards goodness.
By the time Apocalypse came along she’d morphed into a leader the other mutants look up to. Ultimately her switch doesn’t really gel with the character, and if Mystique is such a loud and proud mutant why does she spend most of the film in human form? Lawrence also looked bored as hell during Apocalypse, and since her contract is up it’s unlikely she’ll be returning again.
