10 Movie Franchises Where The Villain Became A Hero

2. Riddick - The Chronicles Of Riddick

Chronicles of Riddick
Universal Pictures

Pitch Black is the movie that first brought Vin Diesel to our attention; he of the gravelly voice and shiny, shiny dome. He growled his into our hearts as Riddick, a badass prisoner who can see in the dark. He has to band together with some civilians to survive on an alien planet, but the film makes it clear he doesn’t give the slightest crap about them.

He has a small change of heart when a character sacrifices herself to save him, and while he retains some surliness in the sequel he’s all around a nicer chap. He avenges the death of a friend, he’s only a dick to this enemies and he becomes the reluctant saviour of the universe by the end.

He also has to learn a bunch of nonsense about his past, which feels tacked on following the original. Diesel still owned the part, though Riddick’s turn to heroism didn’t quite suit him. He goes back to his anti-hero ways with the third movie, making both the audience and Diesel much happier.

Handsome. Charismatic. Intelligent. Noble. Witty. I'm none of these things, but I'm a half decent writer, I guess.
