10 Movie Moments That Pissed Off Fanboys (That Were Actually Great)
9. Professor X’s ‘Death’
X-Men purists were irritated by The Last Stand on a number of counts – notably Jean Grey killing Cyclops and Wolverine in turn euthanizing Jean, neither of which took place in the comics – but what really got fans’ backs up was mentor Charles Xavier’s death by disintegration at the hands of Jean after she is resurrected from the dead and goes postal.
But looking closely at Xavier’s death scene, there’s a moment in which he smiles briefly at Wolverine almost as if he’s managed to hatch some sort of escape plan.
In a post-credits scene featuring Dr Moira MacTaggert tending to a comatose patient, we see this is exactly what has taken place when the patient suddenly speaks up in Xavier’s voice harking back to a scene earlier in the film in which he discusses the ethics of telepathically taking over a brain-dead body with his mutant students. That nicely sets the stage for Patrick Stewart to return as Xavier in The Last Stand’s sort of sequel X-Men: Days of Future Past.
