10 Movie Moments That Should Make You Look Away (But Totally Gripped You)

5. The Bear - Annihilation

Annihilation Bear
Paramount Pictures

Being trapped in a room with a bloodthirsty bear is scary enough, but when that bloodthirsty bear is a mutant with an exposed skull and can also imitate human screams…well, that’s absolute nightmare fuel.

After Anya (Gina Rodriguez) caves into paranoia due to a disastrous scientific expedition, she manages to subdue the rest of her team and ties them to chairs, believing that Natalie Portman’s Lena is responsible for murdering Cass, another of their teammates. Shortly, however, the screams of her supposedly murdered teammate can be heard very nearby.

It emerges that the eerily human screams were actually coming from a mutant bear (the same one that killed Cass). The bear is a grotesque mess of a creature, with an exposed skull that has fused with Cass’ human skull. After the bear salivates over those tied to chairs – almost chewing Josie’s (Tessa Thompson) shoulder off – it brutally kills Anya before a freed Josie removes the contents of its head with an assault rifle.

We have the twisted mind of Alex Garland to thank for what is quite possibly one of the most terrifying movie moments of the 2010s. You’ll want to look away, but you won’t.

Elliot Singleton hasn't written a bio just yet, but if they had... it would appear here.
