10 Movie Remakes You Didn't Know Were In The Works
5. The Great Outdoors
The Original: This 1988 comedy from writer-producer John Hughes and Pretty In Pink director Howard Deutch casts John Candy and Dan Aykroyd as mismatched brothers-in-law who find themselves at loggerheads during a family lakeside vacation.
The Remake: It was announced in April 2017 that Kevin Hart is attached to star in a Great Outdoors remake from producer Michael De Luca; nothing further has been heard on the matter since.
Should We Be Excited?
John Hughes comedies mostly fall into three camps - angst-ridden high school movies, malicious little kid movies, and family vacation movies. No prizes for guessing where The Great Outdoors falls into the mix: substitute Chevy Chase for John Candy and it pretty much would be part of the Vacation series.
As it's hardly one of the most beloved 1980s comedies, surely no one will mind it getting remade, but it's hard to imagine the end results being much better. Still, that all rather depends on who they get to play opposite Hart, and who winds up in the director's chair.
Once again, there's no definitive word yet on when we can expect to see The Great Outdoors, but it's one of a number of projects on Hart's to-do list along with action comedy My Own Worst Enemy, a sequel to Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle, and a third Ride Along movie.
