The world was rocked when the great Philip Seymour Hoffman suddenly died in 2014, at which point he still had a few remaining scenes to shoot for the final entry into the Hunger Games franchise, Mockingjay Part 2.

This included a pivotal scene from the book where Hoffman's character, Plutarch Heavensbee, visits Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) in prison after she attempts to assassinate President Coin (Julianne Moore).

Rather than create the scene using stand-ins or digital doubles of Hoffman, director Francis Lawrence decided to rewrite it and have Plutarch write a letter for Katniss which is read by her pal Haymitch Abernathy (Woody Harrelson).

The letter includes an explanation from Plutarch that he couldn't visit Katniss personally for political reasons, that being seen with her would be dangerous for him.

In a less-than-ideal situation this was ultimately a pretty simple, tidy way to work around Hoffman's tragic death while still conveying the general gravity of his words.
