10 Movie Sequel Villains Far Scarier Than The Original
2. Davy Jones - Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Quite unsurprisingly, Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp) first cinematic appearance became all about him, to the point that you'd be forgiven for forgetting that Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann (Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightly) were supposed to be the main protagonists. Similarly, the villain wasn't exactly the most memorable, which you could forgive because of how damn compelling the pirate was.
James Norrington (Jack Davenport) was essentially a pawn of the East India Trading Company trying to bring down a pirate, but with the emotional tie to Elizabeth to add a bit more depth to the story. This didn't exactly work, and the sequel, Dead Man's Chest showed how a real villain is created.
Davy Jones isn't just the best bad guy in the Pirates franchise, he is one of the most iconic, and most intimidating in cinematic history. The CGI, particularly to say that this released in 2006, was mind-blowing, and Bill Nighy's performance was utterly terrifying.
Davy Jones not only had the lore to back him up, the promises of what would happen if he ever caught Jack Sparrow, and the crew of the damned behind him, he was terrifying even just to look at. As far as the supernatural goes in the Pirates franchise, Davy Jones never delved into the silly or the wacky, he and the Flying Dutchman maintained a real threat from the moment he appeared on screen. If only the tease of his return in Salazar's Revenge could have been followed up on.
