Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey–Maturin novels are largely uncharted waters for cinema, although Peter Weir found success using them as the basis for his 2003 effort Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World.

The Russell Crowe-fronted Napoleonic War epic won two Oscars and was nominated for eight others, as well as netting a not-too-shabby box office haul of $212 million.

Master and Commander has ultimately gone down as one of those failed attempts to launch a series - which seems like an unfair way to remember such a critically-acclaimed film - but that almost wasn't the case.

Weir has always downplayed rumours of a sequel, but Crowe has been vocal about his enthusiasm for one, telling Collider last year...

"Even though I’m not contracted to it, I’d love to play that character again, because after playing that character I kept reading the books, and there are so many wonderful stories. But that was a very expensive movie for its time, so that’s something that has to be examined."

Master and Commander, however, was only made possible thanks to a union between studios Universal, Miramax and Fox, working with O’Brian's estate. So a lot of seats would be required at the negotiating table if a follow-up was to be made.
