Easily taking top spot as the most acclaimed and gripping element of an otherwise drab DCEU upon landing with a superhero-worthy thud in 2017, Patty Jenkins' Wonder Woman had fans instantly champing at the bit for a follow-up.

And while it took a little longer to set free than expected thanks to the world being gripped by an unprecedented health crisis, 1984 did still manage to arrive on the scene by Christmas 2020. Yet, instead of giving Amazonian supporters another reason to fist pump, Jenkins' second Wonder work was met with some rather unflattering reviews.

In any other period in time, said Gal Gadot-starring sequel could've at least relied on its blockbuster appeal to paper over any critical opinions. Yet, with 1984 landing in theatres at a point when going and sitting in a crowded venue was the last thing on many folks' minds, the film found most of its audience on streaming platforms such as HBO Max and Amazon Prime (via rental).

Like many other big-screen-skewed projects denied the chance to really soar in cinemas, a lacklustre $166 million box office haul reflected a failure of an improvised release plan that most definitely won't be repeated for the already announced third entry.
