10 Movie Villain Twists Everyone Hated

2. Richard Thompson - The Bone Collector

The Bone Collector Denzel Washington Angelina Jolie

An adaption of the Jeffery Deaver book, this slow burner saw Denzel Washington as Lincoln Rhyme, a quadriplegic, ret renowned forensics expert who teams with beat cop Amelia Donaghy in a breakout role for Angelina Jolie.

Rhyme is ready to end his life and asks his doctor to assist with this, in just a few days time. However someone is murdering innocent people in elaborate ways and they seem to want Rhyme to chase them. Using his (for the time) hi-tech bed computer and Amelia as his eyes in the field, they begin to piece together the puzzle.

Inevitably, some suspects begin to emerge for the viewer, such as Captain Cheney, the man who benefited most from Rhyme's accident. As the net tightens, the killer invades Rhymes home and we see that it's... his medical technician Richard?

The Groan Collector would have been a more appropriate name for this. Rather than the Doctor and friend, who the book had as the killer they decided to use Richard, and worse cast Leland Orser to play him. You'll remember him as the knife/hooker guy from Se7en. The motivation, that he was a doctor who lost his license due to Rhyme was true to the book, yet Orser didn't have the physical presence or performance to make the twist stick. He didn't look like he could have set up all those traps.

The Bone Collector remains a curiosity of a film, it helped launch some careers but ultimately fell by the wayside because of its poor choice of villain.
