10 Movie Villains You Didn't Realise Actually Won

7. The Nazis - The Great Escape

United Artists

Featuring the most entertaining game of single player catch ever put to film, The Great Escape is an undisputed classic. It displayed the plucky spirit of the Allies even while they were held captive under the tyrannical jackboot of the Nazis. It also proved that it's cool to jump over things on motorbikes.

While the darkness of the subject matter certainly isn't shied away from, for the most part it's a tale of camaraderie in difficult times. In presenting this as they do, it manages to bring some lightness and levity to an otherwise sombre period of history. The Great Escape's patriotic portrayal still isn't afraid to show the depressing truth of what happened to the escapees.

The actual prison break went down in much the same way - and also just like in the film, the majority of those that made a break for it were either captured or killed. Even Steve McQueen's status as coolest man ever doesn't save his character from running afoul of barbed wire and getting caught. It may seem like a bit of a downer but in terms of villains triumphing, I'd say that sadly the Nazis gained the upper hand with this one.
