2. Free State Of Jones
If the renaissance lasted for around three hundred years, then we can look forward to the McConaissance to chug along for some time yet. The next offering will be director Gary Ross' (The Hunger Games, Pleasantville) American Civil War-set 'true story' - which no doubt has played fast and loose with the truth - but nonetheless revolves around a poor farmer who secedes from the South, creating his own free state which opposes the war, the Confederacy and slavery. Whilst it certainly has shades of The Patriot, that's not necessarily a bad thing. McConaughey, in all his rugged, bearded, Southern-drawlin' glory, is a fantastic fit for the time period. Expect authentic, realistic battle scenes and more than one emotional beat from the main man. Also look out for underrated talent Mahershala Ali in a supporting role, along with the much buzzed-about Gugu Mbatha-Raw. All in all, considering the pedigree attached and the impressive trailer which recently debuted, it's fair to say that fans of this particular brand of cinema are in for a treat. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_38WdArR20
