10 Movies From 2016 That Really Shouldn’t Have Been Boring
2. X-Men: Apocalypse
Days Of Future Past was a slam-dunk for the X-Men series, uniting two generations of the franchise in an emotional story that tied up loose ends, while laying out a clean slate for the future. That’s why Apocalypse is such a letdown. It feels like Bryan Singer knew it would be his last X-Men movie, so he threw in every half-baked idea he’d ever dreamed up into it.
The story is a cluttered mess, with way too many subplots and side characters that add little; did Angel, Moira MacTaggert, Psylocke or even Wolverine serve any kind of function here? Apocalypse himself is a real disappointment, with Oscar Isaac being wasted with a one-note character and buried under layers of make-up.
Despite the bombardment of characters and flashy action scenes, it’s just dull to sit through. Thousands die, and none of it means anything. There’s no tension or excitement, it’s just a wall of noise happening noisily. The mooted reboot of the series is probably for the best following this misfire.
