Justin Kurzel’s spotty CV so far includes the drab Assassin’s Creed movie and the alright True History Of The Kelly Gang, but he’s about to redeem himself with another slice of Australian history. This time, he turns his attention to the Port Arthur massacre, a 1996 tragedy in which Martin Bryant gunned down 35 people in Tasmania.

Caleb Landry Jones stars as the disturbed young man who became one of Australia’s most infamous murderers, and won Best Actor for his haunting turn. At 31, Jones has already built quite the CV playing creeps and weirdos, but in Nitram he adds incredible depth to his performance, and will be a good shout come next awards season.

The film also stars Anthony LaPaglia and Judy and Essie Davis, all of whom have picked up fantastic reviews for their work. This looks to be a sensitive and poignant depiction of an unfathomable event, free from exploitation or sensationalisation.

The true tale, not so well known outside Australia, makes for chilling reading, and this impassioned yet thoughtful film should do the difficult story justice.
