8. Demon Island (#93)

People talk about how hard it is to get a movie made these days, and yet when you gaze upon something like Demon Island, which literally and non-ironically clings to a plot about an evil pinata, it's hard to see how that's true. Because the generically-titled Demon Island really does feature a plot about - God, how did this get made? - an evil pinata. An evil pinata! Seriously! In case you're unfamiliar with what, exactly, a pinata is, it's that one of those things you see at parties that people fill with candy, hang up and proceed to hit with sticks. And this is a movie about an evil one of those (albeit non-donkey shaped), which is - for all intents and purposes - about as scary as Kermit the Frog. The real novel thing about Demon Island is that it features Xander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer (also known as Nicholas Brendon), whose career was apparently so low back in 2002 that he read the script for this movie and said: "Yes. I want in." When people asked him what he was up to, what did he say? "Oh - just doing a horror flick about an evil pinata, you know." Cue seriously laughable special effects, insufferable characters who define the term "cardboard" and a soundtrack that never seems to make sense, and you've got this. Which, despite its amateurness, remains somehow riveting in all its incompetent glory.
