10 Movies Missing From Warner Bros.' DCEU Slate (And Why)
7. Gotham City Sirens
Suicide Squad was a critical flop, but it earned just shy of $750 million at the worldwide box office. However, following the aforementioned change in leadership at Warner Bros., it seems inviting David Ayer back to the DC Extended Universe was no longer a priority.
As a result, the filmmaker's plans for Suicide Squad spinoff Gotham City Sirens (which would have focused on a team-up between Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy) were put on the backburner, and Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey was instead made a priority. That boasted a female creative team, and was a movie star Margot Robbie pushed hard for at the studio.
During the press tour, she talked a lot about wanting to work with female filmmakers and Birds of Prey being less "male gaze-y" than Suicide Squad, so chances are that reuniting with Ayer simply wasn't something she was keen on doing given how Harley was treated by him.
Unfortunately, Birds of Prey flopped, and while Robbie will be back as Harley in The Suicide Squad, Warner Bros. resurrecting this spinoff just isn't going to happen (especially now that Catwoman is part of Matt Reeves' The Batman franchise).
