10 Movies So Crazy Over The Top They Were Hilarious
2. Crank/Crank: High Voltage
The real litmus test of the Crank movies is trying to explain the plot to somebody that hasn't seen them, without putting them off entirely. Neveldine/Taylor's gonzo B-movies aren't for everyone, but their fans are vocal in their appreciation for the tongue-in-cheek madness that follows Chev Chelios.
Essentially video game movies that aren't based on a video game, Crank and Crank: High Voltage see Jason Statham embark on a number of frankly ridiculous side-quests in his effort to defeat his end-of-game boss, Jose Pablo Cantillo's Ricky Verona. Who just happens to be a disembodied head in a tank. That eventually gets kicked into a swimming pool.
In reaching that point Chev deals with drug abuse, public fornication, a helpful transvestite and his twin brother that suffers from 'full-body Tourettes', falling out of a helicopter, dry-humping strangers at a racetrack, David Carradine as an old Chinese man, a Godzilla-style fight with Statham wearing a mask of his own face, a flashback with Geri Halliwell playing his mother and assorted other crazy sh*t.
Crank and its sequel are possibly the most overtly-preposterous movies to come out of the studio system in recent years, and gradually get so extreme that it almost becomes a badge of honor. What the hell kind of movie ends with the main character on fire, literally giving the audience the middle finger? A f**king great one.
