10 Movies That Made Subtle Retcons They Hoped You Wouldn't Notice

3. Hoffman's Career Change - Saw III

Though the internal logic of the Saw franchise certainly became increasingly muddled with each new sequel, one of its earlier and more subtle retcons basically confirms they didn't have the wider story mapped out ahead of time.

Saw III introduced fans to a relatively minor supporting character called Forensic Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), who in Saw IV is revealed to be Jigsaw's (Tobin Bell) new apprentice and then becomes the primary antagonist for the rest of the original series.

But from Saw IV onward Hoffman is no longer a forensic officer, having been swiftly reimagined as a Detective Lieutenant with the hope that most viewers wouldn't ever notice.

This is especially messy considering that the bulk of Saw III and Saw IV take place within the same brief time period, so you can't even fudge the already shaky excuse that Hoffman got promoted - it makes no sense at all.

Granted this is one of the milder continuity gaffes in the franchise, such that most fans probably never even noticed it themselves.
