10 Movies That Massively Over-Performed At The Box Office
1. Alice In Wonderland
Alice in Wonderland may just be the worst movie to earn over a billion dollars at the box office, depending on your tolerance of the Transformers franchise. Tim Burton's Academy Award-winning adaptation (that's right, it won the Oscar for Best Art Direction) may not have been a critical darling, but thanks in part to 'The Avatar Effect' it became just the sixth movie in history to cross the ten-figure milestone.
As the first major 3D blockbuster to follow in the wake of James Cameron's game-changing epic, Alice in Wonderland saw a huge bump in box office numbers compared to industry projections when it hit theaters in March 2010, a bump that saw the similarly-maligned Clash of the Titans remake earn close to $500m later that same month.
After opening to a mammoth $116.1m, it held the top spot at the domestic box office for three weeks and pulled in some big numbers overseas that ultimately accounted for over two-thirds of the movie's worldwide total. By the time it finally left theaters almost four months down the line, Burton's style-over-substance blockbuster had racked up an impressive $1.025bn. To put things into perspective, the 2016 sequel failed to even crack $300m globally and made less money during its entire domesti run than the original made in its first three days.
