10 Movies That Prove Action Stars Shouldn't Do Comedy

4. Sylvester Stallone - Oscar (1991)

MSDOSCA EC010 After almost 20 years of establishing himself as one of the most bankable action stars in Hollywood, Sylvester Stallone decided it was time to do a comedy. Teaming with director John Landis, Stallone plays Snaps Provolone, a depression era gangster looking to go straight. Stallone seems to fit the role of a mobster with his bulky frame well, but as far as handling himself in an intentionally over the top screwball comedy, he fails to hold the reins. The film is based upon a stage play, so the heavy lyrical qualities of the performance coupled with requiring astute comic timing are way to out of the monosyllabic Stallone's range, who as the lead in the film becomes a huge detriment. Oscar was poorly received when it was released in 1991 and Stallone took the brunt of the backlash for his lackluster work. If the luke warm reception for Oscar was any indication that Stallone should keep his distance from comedy he didn't listen. The following year Stallone starred in the equally stillborn comedy Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot, which was thankfully his last foray into comedy.
