10 Movies That Were Just Trailers For Other Movies
2. The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Before Sony made the deal with Marvel to share the rights to Spider-Man, they set about attempting to forge their own cinematic universe, solely out of Spider-Man characters. And what a poor decision that was.
The result was that their next film, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was bursting at the seams with references and nods to future developments, to the point that there was hardly any room left for the film to tell its own story. Important threads of the narrative, like Gwen and Peter's separation or the relationship between Peter and Harry Osborne, are tossed aside in favor of setting up the next seven spin-offs.
The most heavy-handed element is the Sinister Six. Sony was actively developing a spinoff centered on the villain team and boy does it show. The Rhino gets to appear for all of five minutes of screentime and Harry turns into the Green Goblin at the last possible moment, rushing the hell out of his transformation so that he can kill Gwen Stacy and be the established leader by the time the Sinister Six assembles.
Even smaller moments in the film, like Peter's interactions with Aunt May are ruined by Sony ham-fistedly attempting to set up an Aunt May prequel(!?!).
Thankfully, this film flopped and brought Sony to their senses... kinda. Even after the Marvel deal, they're still pushing ahead with some of these plans, with the upcoming Venom movie being a prime example.
