10 Movies They Keep Saying Will Be Made (That Never Will)

4. Ghostbusters 3

Ghostbusters 2
Columbia Pictures

Before the internet exploded thanks to female Ghostbusters, the Paul Feig reboot was originally set to be a follow up to the first two films. Ghostbusters 3 was in the making since 1989, and every few years Dan Aykroyd – writer and star of the original films – would promise fans that it wasn’t that far off.

Things got moving when Aykroyd finished a script in 1999 called Ghostbusters 3: Hellbent, which had the Ghostbusters in an alternate version of Manhattan called, uhh, Manhelltan. It’s no wonder Bill Murray refused to be in that version of the film, claiming the script was no good.

From there the film kept being teased but ultimately not moving forward, until 2010 when Harold Ramis had writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupinitsky (writers of the forgetful Year One) pen a sequel featuring the original cast as well as new characters. Murray, in an interview with GQ, revealed that this script too wasn’t up to his standards, and as a result Aykroyd declared the film to be in “suspended animation” in 2012.

Then in 2014 Sony decided they needed a Ghosbusters Universe ASAP, and as a result they started pursuing Ghostbusters 3 directors. First Phil Lord and Chris Miller passed, then Reuben Fleischer, then finally Paul Feig signed on and rebooted the whole thing.

At the time Sony was going to do a reboot AND Ghostbusters 3, connect them together, and… That’s technically still the plan, but we all know how the reboot worked out for Sony…
