Johnny Depp's boozing Jack Sparrow has grown increasingly unlikable as a protagonist over the last several films, as the culture around him as grown less and less willing to tolerate such behavior from our supposed 'heroes'.

So after a five-year hiatus, surely the filmmakers behind this franchise would have the foresight or knowledge to revamp the character or at least offer up some meaningful consequences to his destructive actions? Apparently not. This lazy fifth installment features Jack Sparrow (and Johnny Depp) at his absolute worst. He's constantly blind stinking drunk, he objectifies every woman he meets based on how attractive he finds them, and he never even has the decency to grow a conscience.

Where previous films may have painted him in a similar light, they at least had the decency to have him do something that at least attempted to redeem his transgressions. Here, he is an unlikable imitation of his former self through and through and the film never even offers up anything remotely resembling consequences for his actions.

All of this is only made worse by the film's fumbling attempts at making a commentary on the women in the film. Carina is introduced and is supposed to be a smart and capable female character, who keeps being mistaken as a witch. So the film is actively trying to show how silly of an age it was 'back then', but isn't doing anything with its female characters to combat this. In the same year films like Wonder Woman and Star Wars were released, this felt especially useless and hackneyed.
