10 Movies Totally Changed For Overseas Audiences
4. Looper Was Longer In China
Rian Johnson's mind-bending 2012 science fiction thriller Looper looked set for a rough ride in China due to their notorious opposition to any kind of time travel.
To circumvent this, the studio teamed up China-based DMG Entertainment to film a number of scenes on location in Shanghai instead of Paris as Johnson had originally intended.
These scenes filmed were mostly expositional and provided background on Joseph Gordon-Levitt/Bruce Willis' character's downwards spiral.
Unfortunately, US test audiences felt these scenes were unnecessary and upset the pacing of the film, so many of them ended up on the cutting room floor.
Chinese audiences however, were delighted to see their country on the big screen. This led to studio bosses deciding to re-add these scenes for the Chinese release.
Although this could be considered to be another a cynical cash-grab to entice Chinese audiences, it is at least a little more wholesome than wildly intrusive product placement.
