2. The Hunchback - Kill List

Like Total Recall before it, Kill List also stands as something of a mindf*ck - it's not a movie that can be understood in a single viewing, if at all. The plot concerns two former soldiers who take on one last job but find themselves caught up in an increasingly strange and terrifying set of circumstances that cannot be explained in a few mere paragraphs.

The movie memorably culminates with the "hero" of Kill List, a man named Jay, facing off against what appears to be a "hunchback" with a knife in order to become the de facto king of an occult group. Jay eventually wins the fight by stabbing the creature to death, but - in a shocking twist - the hunchback is revealed to be his confused wife and son, strapped together, covered with a sheet. How could anybody have guessed such an unexpected and devastating finale? On the first viewing, such a thing would have been near on impossible - but there is a little clue embedded in the film that foreshadows the ending: towards the beginning of Kill List, there is a brief scene in which Jay, his wife and his son can be glimpsed playing around in the garden - reminiscent of that final scene, the son clings to his mother's back as Jay - rubber sword in hand - "attacks." Horrific.
