10 Movies With Terrible Life Messages

6. Drop Everything For The Man In Your Life - The Little Mermaid

As you'll know by the end of this list if you don't already, Disney may be lauded for their classic animated films, but not so much for their gender representations, as they frequently tend to cast women in a subservient light, needing the help of a man, something that has really only been rectified in recent Disney films like Tangled, where the tables were turned completely. The Little Mermaid is a beautifully animated, fun Disney classic, but it's also got a pretty horrendous moral message, whereby 16-year-old mermaid Ariel leaves her family to play house with a guy she's only seen once, but insists is her true love. It's not exactly a great message to bestow upon the impressionable young girls who are going to be watching the film; abandon those who love you on a whim to pursue a man simply because he looks good, despite having no idea of the content of his character or whether you are in any way compatible. It's a shallow, anachronistic message for a film that's really recent enough that it should probably know better.
