After a long slog of children’s musical movies during the 1990s, Shrek came around at the perfect time. Loosely based on a fairy tale picture book of the same name, it was a movie which jabbed at many beloved fairy tales, from Pinocchio to Sleeping Beauty, and parodied all those delightful Disney films.

Moreover, it took the unconventional protagonist of an ogre and turned him into a hero. It was a happily ever after story in a different sense that was able to make fun of the classic fairy tales, all while embracing them too, and came at exactly the right time.

Sure, the DreamWorks franchise may have spun out slightly too many sequels and spin-off films (allegedly, there is a Shrek 5 coming soon!) and the movies have been memed to death, but no one can deny the original Shrek film was unique and fresh. With its hidden adult humour and comical pop culture references, it was entertaining for all demographics, making it all the more shocking for anyone that the movie is now twenty years old.
