10 Movies You're Embarrassed You Love

1. Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace

Freddy Vs Jason

You can’t say you didn’t see this coming. So much has already been written on the infamous Star Wars Prequels that George Lucas’s attempt at restarting his legendary sci-fi franchise is now one of the most loathed films of all time. Jar Jar Binks is awful, Jake Lloyd’s performance is rubbish, the overused CGI looks terrible and the story unnaturally twists and turns to fit in unnecessary action scenes. Everything wrong with the Star Wars prequels is exemplified in The Phantom Menace.

But over the years, the film has gained a sort of cult status. Almost entirely through memes, the prequel series has grown a following that look past its many flaws to find humour and excitement in what was actually done well. Who can forget the legendary Duel of the Fates against Darth Maul, after all?

Even Jar Jar can be a little funny if you apply the “Jar Jar is a Sith Lord” theory to him. A lot of what we didn’t like about The Phantom Menace was based on our affection for the Original trilogy, but viewed as a standalone, there’s actually still some stuff to love… even if it is in a so-bad-it’s-good way.

Still, it’s not a film you’d go telling everyone that you love. It’s still by far the worst Star Wars movie, and even if Jar Jar as a Sith Lord is a funny theory, it’s been debunked. If you want to love a Star Wars prequels, even if it’s just for the memes, Revenge of the Sith is a much more respectable choice.
