"Tool up, honey bunny. It's time to get bad guys."

A garish, crazy mess, Kick-!*$% really embraces the 'wouldn't it be awesome' attitude of a generation raised on superhero movies and punches reality in the gut with it.

Below all the bright colours and ultra violence there is an intelligent social commentary that questions why normal society deems vigilantism as an oddity while fully accepting crime and all of the suffering it causes. This point is not belaboured but instead is used as a rebuttal to any scrutiny of the real world motivations of its protagonists.

Hit Girl is a mirror image of young people today who grow up thinking gang violence and gun crime are just parts of every day life. Questioning Big Daddy at first seems fair until we realise the hypocrisy of that action. Her childlike glee while killing criminals is unsettling but highly entertaining.

Kick-!*$% himself points out that while we view several men beating on one while everybody just stands and watches as normal, we think he is strange for stepping in. Moments like this retain enough edge to keep you invested in the craziness. The entire film is sick but in all the right ways. Brutality is never shied away from and the strong moral stance of the film makes this much more palatable.

If people are so entertained by good triumphing over evil they feel guilty, you know they're doing something right.

Eddie is a writer, cinephile, TV fan and wrestling abuse victim from Newcastle. After receiving his film degree in London he returned home to lift boxes in the vein of an 80s montage... It's not as fun as it looks in the films.
