5. Kamacuras
Two metres long even before a radioactive storm on their island habitat makes them grow into fifty-foot monstrosities, Kamacuras are a species of gigantic praying mantis, and they are the best insect Kaiju out there.
They first featured in Son of Godzilla, a light-hearted 1967 movie in which we see Godzilla's gentler, more protective side. A range of enormous creatures threaten Godzilla's young son Minilla, a helpless squeaking dweeb the less said about whom the better, and Godzilla demonstrates his parental credentials by destroying pretty much everything on the island.
Kamacuras – or ‘Gimantis’, as the original English dub had it – combine everything awesome about Kaiju. They are an uncontrollable force of nature running out of control, with a preposterous backstory, an ear-shredding shriek, and Kaiju-shredding claws.
