4. Megalon
Megalon is an insect god worshipped by the subterranean civilization of Seatopia, who unleash him upon the world as revenge for underground nuclear testing. Part cockroach, part rhinoceros beetle, part cricket, he has enormous drills for hands and can fire lasers from his horn.
As painful as it is to admit it, Godzilla Vs. Megalon is one of the weakest of the Showa Toho movies.
The Seatopia stuff jumps the shark (even for Toho, whose fans know to expect delightfully ludicrous stories). The effects shots of Megalon’s laser beam are recycled from King Ghidora’s previous appearances. Jet Jaguar, a giant robot who teams up with Godzilla to fight Megalon and Gigan, is one of the least inspiring Kaiju-adjacent characters out there.
There’s also a kid sidekick. Barf.
But Megalon is an incredible Kaiju, with a bad attitude, great design, and mountains of unfulfilled potential. He deserves another shot!
