10 Old-School Toho Kaiju That Legendary Need To Reincarnate

From Shelob in The Return of the King to the swarming spiders of Arachnophobia or Eight-Legged Freaks, giant spiders have featured in classic sci-fi and fantasy for years. There’s a simple reason that no monster franchise is complete without a massive arachnid: giant spiders are scary! And Kumonga is the king.

Appearing in 1967’s Son of Godzilla and 1968’s Destroy All Monsters, Kumonga is a huge black and yellow spider driven only by the animal need to feed on his prey. Merciless in his pursuit, remorseless in his blank-eyed appetite for Kaiju flesh, nothing stops Kumonga for long.

It’s true that Kong: Skull Island saw a giant spider take care of a soldier or two. But Kumonga wouldn’t go down as easily as that one did. He’s survived plenty of blasts of Godzilla’s atomic breath, so he’s one tough customer.

In terms of his powers and abilities, he spits sticky, suffocating webbing and attacks Godzilla and Kamacuras with his pointed legs and venomous stinger.

That is, his powers are remarkably similar to real spiders, so there’s a chance that Legendary would be able to incorporate Kumonga (and Kamacuras, for that matter) into their MonsterVerse without too much mind-bending science-bibble.
