10 Opening Horror Movie Scenes That Should've Been Cut

4. The Alien Spaceship Lands - The Thing

Saw The Final Chapter

Much like Predator, John Carpenter's The Thing needlessly shows the shapeshifting alien's spacecraft hurtling through space as it prepares to crash-land on Earth.

Now this is certainly less offensive than Predator given that The Thing makes it clear from the outset that the protagonists are dealing with an alien entity, and the marketing makes no attempt to hide this. Plus, said spacecraft is again shown to the audience before the end of the first act.

All the same, it doesn't really add anything to show the spacecraft in the first minute of the movie, so why not let viewers experience it just as the movie's characters also do?

Plus, let's be blunt - even for 1982, the effects work on the ship looks pretty rough, especially in contrast to the film's otherwise sublime practical effects.

Does this 30-second scene excessively harm the movie overall? No, but its removal would certainly make it a teeny bit better.
