5. You Don't Mess With the Zohan
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jmMXk0bA8gk I would never begin to profess that Adam Sandler's Don't Mess with the Zohan is a good film, but it does feature a pretty outlandish plot even for the standards of his usual fare, with Sandler playing a super-skilled Israeli soldier who decides he wants to give up this tough-man life and become a hairdresser in the US. Boy, that's one quirky premise that surely isn't inspired by real events... Except it is. Nezi Arbib did just that, setting up a salon in San Diego with his brothers - who are also all ex-Israeli commandos - after deciding to call it quits in the armed forces. Sandler went to an unexpected amount of trouble to bring their story to the screen somewhat faithfully - except that scene where Zohan swims like a dolphin, at least - spending a few weeks hanging out with Nezi and his brothers, and even learning to cut hair and adopt their mannerisms. Perhaps most absurdly, some of the man's customers profess that the film is not that far from the truth. Insane.
