10 Paranormal Horror Movies You Need To See Before You Die
3. Candyman
Is there a more enchanting villain in all of history than Tony Todd's Candyman?
Filled with whimsical dream-like sequences, tragic tales of love and loss and some seriously powerful messages about identity and race in our society, Candyman is not only a classic paranormal horror movie that everyone should watch before they die, it's one of the most underrated films ever produced.
Released in 1992 right as interest in the horror genre was hitting an all-time low after a plethora of sleazy, low-quality slasher flicks, Bernard Rose's take on the Clive Barker classic story revolves around the legend of Candyman, the ghost of a son of a slave who was brutally killed during his lifetime for falling in love with a white woman. According to legends, if someone calls out to Candyman in front of a mirror five times, he will appear and kill them.
Viriginia Madsen plays Helen Lyle in the film, semiotics grad student that summons Candyman and becomes haunted by visions of him calling for her to become 'his victim'. Thought-provoking and strangely beautiful, Candyman is far more of a tragic love story than it is the slasher film one might have assumed when they saw a guy storming around in a trench coat and with a hook for a hand.
