Though she was a relatively unknown commodity to most film audiences prior to 1964, Julie Andrews had been forging a career as a respectable stage actor on the West End and Broadway up to that point.

Then, after witnessing Andrew's performance as Queen Guinevere in a production of Camelot, Walt Disney decided she was the perfect fit to play the lead in his upcoming movie: Mary Poppins (1964). Andrews declined the offer at first, as she was pregnant and wanted to go back to London to give birth, but Disney insisted they would wait for her.

And thank the heavens they did, as Andrews embodied the role like few else could have and the film became Disney's biggest box office hit at that point in time.

On top of this box office success, the actor also managed to walk away with both the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical and the Academy Award for Best Actress.

Andrews' practically perfect feature debut set the tone for the rest of her film career, as she'd later receive Oscar nominations for her work in The Sound of Music (1966) and Victor/Victoria (1983). She'd also pick up Grammy and Emmy awards over the years, but is just one Tony away from that sacred EGOT.

Even without it, though, she's still an absolute legend...
