After a young Barbra Streisand took Broadway by storm with her performance as entertainer Fanny Brice in Funny Girl (1964), it became clear that there was only one star able to do the role justice in the upcoming film adaptation.

The Broadway star was eventually brought on board despite her not having any other previous experience on film, yet that simply didn't matter. Streisand more than proved she had the chops for the big screen and earned critical acclaim for her turn in the feature.

After being nominated for a Tony award for her stage version of the role and losing out to Carol Channing in Hello, Dolly!, Streisand took home the Academy Award for Best Actress a mere five years later in her feature debut. She would also share the award with Katherine Hepburn (The Lion in Winter), marking the only occasion there has ever been a tie in this Academy Award category.

Funny Girl ultimately kick-started the star's career in Hollywood, as she'd later appear in a film adaptation of the aforementioned Hello, Dolly! (1969), Funny Lady (1975), A Star Is Born (1976) ... oh, and Meet the Fockers (2004).

With an Oscar, Honorary Tony, Grammy and Emmy Award to her name, Babs deservedly sits pretty as one of the few members of the illustrious EGOT gang.
