10 Perfect Casting Choices For The Stand Remake

5. Mother Abagail - Oprah Winfrey

Played in the mini-series by: Ruby Dee Abagail Freemantle, also known as "Mother Abagail", is a 106 year old woman who lives alone in her family farmhouse in Hemingford Home, Nebraska. Many of the survivors have dreams of her and are inexplicably drawn to her home to meet her. Mother Abagail claims to be a prophet of God and knows all to well the dangers that the "Dark Man", Randall Flagg, represents to the last vestiges of mankind. Flagg also marks her as the one who can lead the Boulder Free Zone members to conquer over his evil, even if he doesn't fully believe she can pull it off. The role of Mother Abagail requires an actress who is able to exude quiet dignity, honour and morality. Which is why Oprah Winfrey is a great casting choice. Although her roles have been widespread and inconsistent, Winfrey is an award nominated and winning actress. She is strong and confident and conveys a sense of calm that often belies her character's plight. In a role as important as Mother Abagail, those qualities are of the utmost importance and a prime reason for casting Ms. Winfrey as the matriarchal figure who unites the Boulder survivors and leads them against Randall Flagg.
